Cops entrap bikers
Thursday, 09/23/04

Two members of the Hells Angels were deliberately set up by police, who tricked them into making threats while being secretly taped, a court heard yesterday.

On trial are Steven Lindsay and Ray Bonner, members of the Woodbridge chapter of the Hells Angels, charged with extortion and committing a crime for the benefit of a criminal organization.

The Crown's key witness testified that Lindsay and Bonner threatened to put him hospital if he wouldn't pay them $75,000 after he sold them pirate satellite equipment.

But defence lawyer Steven Skurka suggested in court yesterday that the bikers were tricked by the witness under directions from the OPP in a scheme which he called "the plan."

The witness, who can't be identified under a court order, admitted to Skurka he joined in the plan to "lure" Lindsay and Bonner to a meeting at a restaurant near Barrie, where he wore a hidden tape recorder and asked calculated questions to capture threats on tape.

"They went there because they were led to believe they were going to be paid the money. But that was never going to happen, was it?" asked the lawyer.

"No, sir," said the witness.

He said "the plan" was to flip his story once they were all at the restaurant and tell the bikers he had no money so that Lindsay would become angry.

In court, the tapes were played and the witness could be heard telling Lindsay he didn't have the money with him.

"If you f--- up pal, you're in a lot of trouble," Lindsay says on the recording.

"That was the plan by police and you fulfilled it perfectly, right?" said Skurka.

"Yes," the witness said.
