The alleged victim of an extortion broke down in tears on the witness stand yesterday when he testified that his children fear for their lives after they saw two Hells Angels members threaten him at his home.
The former Barrie businessman is the Crown's key witness in this trial against Steven Lindsay, and Raymond Bonner, of the Hells Angels' Woodbridge chapter. They are charged with extortion and committing a crime for the benefit of a criminal organization.
The trial began yesterday before a judge in Barrie.
The alleged victim told the court he sold Chris Maskell, of Lindsay, Ont., $75,000 worth of "black boxes" that could program "smart cards" to fool satellite companies so users would not have to pay a monthly fee. But, he said, on Jan. 23, 2002, Maskell arrived at his front door with the two Hells Angels members, who demanded the money back and threatened to put him in a hospital.
If Crown attorney Graeme Cameron can prove the men are guilty of extortion, he will then try to prove that Hells Angels is a criminal organization and that the two members committed the crime for the benefit of that organization -- an offence that could net the men 14-year prison sentences.
It was not reported what the relationship was between Lindsay and the two bikers.
